American Exceptionalism and the Political Civil War of the 21st Century

Unlike many in social media today, I have not imprisoned myself into an ideological bubble, so I get to see all the partisan arguments from both left and right. I see indiscriminate support for Trump and perfunctory hate of him. Political parties, like religions, make progress in pushing "the way, the truth, the light" to their members who fail to think critically. Blind loyalty is encouraged and rewarded.

The American political civil war of the 21st century won't be as horrible as the one that ended in 1865, but will still claim victims in its wake as families divide, choose sides, and separate. Such is life. But at the end of this political civil war, if America is still entrapped by two major political parties, there may be a metaphorical 'cease fire' agreement akin to North and South Korea.

Crips and Bloods have nothing on Republicans and Democrats, both gangs are less violent than either of those political parties who wield military might for their own political and partisan gain. I've been done with blind loyalty for a while now. But I must admit frustration in seeing how easily people fall prey to purveyors of propaganda, fake news, and outright lies and hypocrisy.

It is possible that I expect too much out of militantly ignorant and ill-informed people to actually think their way clear of it. At the end of World War II, Japanese Emperor Hirohito repudiated what he called the ''mere legends and myths'' that had created ''the false conception that the Emperor is divine.'' He saved millions of lives because he confronted the myths of his own personal existence. America needs its own version of Hirohito.

Hundreds of millions of people in America have become radicalized. They radicalize their own children in toxic blend of religion and militaristic nationalism. This needs to stop because it creates damage to the American soul and leads to the destruction of liberty at home and freedom abroad.

If America truly is exceptional, it will emerge from this tribal morass in the end. Here's hoping America continues to be exceptional.
