It's Time for a Constitutional Convention
Let's have a Constitutional Convention...
Based on the condition of our democracy, the instability of the GOP in particular, we need to make some major amendments to the US Constitution. This country is being torn apart politically as the two-party system disenfranchises third parties. Look at the debates for example.
Our economic futures depend on getting this republic put back in order. The Chinese propaganda arm is telling the truth about the US political system in tamping down a desire among their activists to install an American style democracy. The USA is broken politically. Corruption in Congress and at all levels of government has become endemic. We need to either plan for putting it back together or plan for peaceful dissolution.
When Bill Clinton left office, the national debt was just over $4 trillion. When Bush left office the national debt was around $10.6 trillion. Today our national debt is at $19.7 trillion. The truth is that this debt can be dealt with over time. But it has to move in the correct direction to do so. And there's little evidence that people truly care at all about it. It's true that Japan is far worse than the US but there needs to be a desire to inject fiscal responsibility into our political system.
Right now there is no incentive for politicians to cut spending because cuts in one state will be spent in others. Priorities don't matter because lobbyists want everything and are willing to fund campaign coffers to get from the government that which they need.
The answer is to go back to the Constitution and make some modern changes that help bolster our republic, enhance the stability of our democracy, and end the disenfranchisement of Americans who want nothing to do with the two-party system.
I'm not holding my breath for any of this to happen.

You say Constitutional Convention but I think you are meaning Article V which is a Convention of States. Big difference. http://www.conventionofstates.com/don_t_mix_up_your_conventions_or_you_might_destroy_the_country
ReplyDeleteActually, we need a con-con. Article V may not be sufficient.
