Trump Tweets as a Petulant Child, the Media Should Treat Him as One
Ignoring Trump's Mindless Tweets Makes Sense
Danielle Pletka appeared on "Meet the Press" today. According to Wikipedia, she was born in 1963 in Melbourne, Australia, and is the vice-president for foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). She made some great points today that were kind of squashed by other media members at the table. She said that the media should not cover each Trump tweet as if it were American policy, exerting shock and protest over each tweet. The other journalists suggested that would be akin to treating Trump as a petulant child since we've always viewed the president's statements as official government policy. I agree with Ms. Pletka.
In fact, what I would suggest the media do is essentially give Trump a ranking system on his tweets and essentially categorize each tweet into policy versus personality sectors. Then once a month, it would be helpful to review all the Trump tweets and lampoon the worst ones as they should be.
There should not be a regular daily news cycle where Trump's tweets are taken seriously as if they were well thought out prescriptions for whatever ails our country. He has earned being treated as a troll upon America, understanding that a large number of people support him, that's without concern to me.
Instead of chasing Trump's mindless tweets, the media should pull back their reporters from the White House and start hanging out in government agencies and get actual policy actions at the agency level. Make the agencies their news points of reference and essentially stop giving attention to Trump from the White House. Instead of being offended at Trump trying to lock out reporters, just walk away and go report how the street is experiencing the Trump presidency.
Trump's childlike fits and behavior should be countered with the constitutional structure of our government. Congress will have to suddenly stop being a door mat for the presidency and do its job.
