Question: Do Black Lives Matter?
Those who say "all lives matter" must acknowledge that "Black Lives Matter" or they are lying to themselves and everyone else.
As we all know, the phrase "Black Lives Matter" brings spitting rage to some people (virtually all are white who respond that way) because they somehow see the word "only" in front of the phrase.
Many who object most loudly are old enough to recall a time when blacks weren't allowed to eat at lunch counters because they were black. And certainly they remember when blacks couldn't enter the front door but were expected to enter through the service doors, or back doors.
Others remember when interracial marriage was illegal. Many remember when unemployment insurance was available for occupations dominated by whites, but was unavailable for occupations dominated by blacks.
Many of these same people recall opposition to the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Some remember when blacks were expected to ride in the back of the bus.
More still remember when the national guard had to be called in to force Alabama to integrate their schools. More remember when busing created "white flight" where people fled cities with their children in tow in order to escape integrated schools.
Still more remember when drug laws were enacted to prosecute crack cocaine more harshly than standard cocaine because minorities were using crack, which was cheaper than cocaine.
Still more recall that aggressive, broken window policing model was implemented in poor black neighborhoods which led to all kinds of abuses, similar to that captured in the Rodney King video.
In response to the phrase "Black Lives Matter," some yelled back, "Blue Lives Matter." Yes, "Blue Lives Matter" and have always been vigorously supported by the majority white communities across America. Can the same be said of black lives in America?
So I have a simple question for you: Do black lives matter?
