Trump Wins Presidency, Can He Unite the Nation?
Congratulations to President-Elect Donald J. Trump
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. - Mark TwainPresident-Elect Donald J. Trump will be the next president of the United States of America. This is the reality of what a majority of the American people have chosen for themselves. If this decision is a mistake, the American people will bear the cost of such a decision.
Two very flawed presidential nominees offered by the two-party system resulted in a dilemma of truly the lesser of two evils. The pundits, including myself, did not believe Trump could win. (I don't believe his message should have won.) The pollsters who predicted long odds for a Trump win are left with statistical models that failed epically. Those of us who believed these models were accurate will need to seek to understand why.
Was it as simple as people being ashamed to admit to pollsters that they supported Trump as some have said? Who knows? But I look at the postmortem on how the models of advanced polling failed. Regardless, I am forever going to humbly receive the lessons of 2016.
As for the nation, we are divided. Even families are divided. And with good reason. The current president-elect has promised to do things as president that run against our traditions of liberty, justice, meritocracy, and the Constitution. But tonight the GOP celebrate. The victors should be congratulated but admonished to be cautious.
As I write this post, the DOW futures are down 500 points, up from a low of 800 points. When Trump took the podium tonight, he acted responsibly. The first time I have seen such behavior. Here's hoping that President Trump will not govern as he campaigned. Here's hoping the country can come together to deal with important issues facing America. Here's hoping opposition to terrible ideas will be genuine, vigorous, energetic, and sincere in defense of America.
The Constitution must be used to restrain and limit the presidency. The Congress must start to impose its constitutional role on advancing the ideas of the executive branch. Too often, the party of the president has abdicated their proper role in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities. Perhaps the Democratic Party will resume it's anti-war ideals now that a Democrat is no longer in power.
Lastly, the people should look at this election result as a lesson of what happens when two strong political parties run the government and arrange the system against new forms of political competition. We need a big change in America and it's not the kind offered by either of the two major political parties.
