UNWANTED "DEPLORABLES"

The future is in libertarian humanitarianism, not the brutalism found among deplorables today.

A few weeks ago, in a moment of unvarnished truth, Hillary Clinton referred to half of Donald Trump’s supporters as “deplorables,” saying they were “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic – you name it.” The only thing up for debate in her comments is whether her characterization applies to more than half, less than half, or exactly half. But her sentiments are unquestionably true. That seems to be a major problem for those who say they’re tired of the PC culture. The irony is amusing.

It is becoming more and more evident that the future of political parties made up of deplorables is bleak, and rightly so. Millennials, as a demographic, have very little tolerance for bigotry. This is a positive sign that the culture, despite the large number of deplorables, has succeeded in conveying virtue to large segments of youth. Deplorables pose a major challenge for the GOP on many levels. After November of 2016, the GOP will likely try to prune its “basket of deplorables” problem. Will deplorables be welcome in the Libertarian Party (LP)? Let’s hope not.

Debate has ensued with and among deplorables who demand to be welcomed into the Libertarian Party. They argue the LP should embrace them because everyone has the liberty to express whatever they want under the LP banner. While it’s true that Libertarians advocate freedom for everyone, deplorables do not. In fact they seek to use majoritarianism and states’ rights to win battles perceived to be lost at the federal level. If Libertarians don’t want to be defined as a party of deplorables, a lowest common denominator, it cannot be seen to accept deplorables or tolerate their ideology of bigotry among their ranks.

Some will no doubt accuse me of being a purist, unwilling to see the Libertarian Party grow. I have a very low bar for someone who wishes to join the liberty movement – just don’t be a bigot.  Ultimately I have no control over who affiliates with the Libertarian Party. But if the Libertarian Party becomes a haven for deplorables, the liberty movement will no longer reside in the Libertarian Party.

The good news is that there’s no need for the Libertarian Party to make a space for deplorables. Youngsters are embracing the 'liberty for all' ideals that are growing within the Libertarian Party. As years pass, deplorables will be a smaller and smaller portion of the electorate. In the future, deplorables will be seen in the same light as racists of the old South are viewed today.
