BLACK LIVES MATTER
I was awakened a bit early this morning while listening to Los Angeles radio. They covered the story about Philando Castile who was shot dead on the street by a cop for no good reason. This was the second day in a row where there was video of an event where a roadside killing was broadcast in social media. To say it's tragic doesn't quite reach the level of outrage that we all should be espousing today.
I wonder about that precious little four year old girl who witnessed this and who told her distraught mother, "I'm here for you mama." A four year old. This has got to stop and complaining about it on Facebook seems so insufficient. We MUST do more in all our communities to challenge those responsible for policing policies and operating procedures. While this is an operational and training problem (maybe even psychological), this is just completely unacceptable.
Without question, I have been cast as a "cop basher" by many who reflexively defend police action and actors. I once filed a complaint on a "highly decorated" officer who I (and others) felt had crossed the line with me personally. I have been criticized for that action by some living in my community who have no clue about the details of my complaint. So be it. Me being unpopular with my personal critics pales by comparison to these kinds of tragedies. It has to stop.
Failing to speak out over fears of being ostracized or shunned by those who are deferential to actors in the police state is unacceptable. Everyone needs to be speaking out against these kinds of heinous violations of human rights and we all need to take action to bring it to a stop.
If we are all held to account in this life, it's not those who did evil using the power of government that will be held in highest contempt. It will be those who went along with it because they didn't want to bear the risk associated with helping to bring it to an end. #BLACKLIVESMATTER
