Oklahoma Should End Prohibition Now!

Oregon is getting right on cannabis. When will Oklahoma?

Traveling around the state of Oregon has been very enlightening. The state government of Oregon has legalized the selling marijuana for recreational use. They are no longer locking people up in cages for using, purchasing, and marketing marijuana.

Oregon expects to raise over $10 million in 2016. Not that I like high taxation, but it turns out that Oregon may have over 4 times that estimate. In the first month of legal cannabis, Oregon colected $3.48 million. That trend would result in over $40 million, not to mention less police state enforcement and incarceration costs.

Oregon will allocate the tax in the following fashion: Source: Oregon.gov

40% to Common School Fund.
20% to Mental Health Alcoholism and Drug Services.
15% to State Police.
10% to Cities for enforcement of the measure.
10% to Counties for enforcement of the measure.
5% to Oregon Health Authority for alcohol and drug abuse prevention.

Sure we might argue over the fact that taxation is happening at all, but it's great to see them deviate from the idea that people should be thrown in cages for engaging in cannabis trade.

Being in this state watching how they have handled legalization is something Oklahoma should do now. Alcohol prohibition ended in 1933. Oklahoma didn't end prohibition until 1959. Oklahoma doesn't have to be last to come around to sensible cannabis policy.

P.S. No, I haven't partaken in legal cannabis while in Oregon. Though I have had some awesome craft beer. Another thing Oklahoma needs to do is pass modern alcohol laws. Oklahoma needs to grow up and stop pushing big government, nanny state policies that hurt and destroy.

Modernize Oklahoma's alcohol laws. End prohibition of cannabis.
