It’s Bigotry, Not Pushback Against Political Correctness

Many of those who support Donald Trump claim they do so on the basis that they are weary of political correctness. They rattle off a slew of grievances about feeling silenced when it comes to condemning non-Christians, discriminating against gays, Asians, blacks, Mexicans or any other disfavored minority. They lament not being able to ‘talk straight’ about the proper place of women or making generally sexist remarks. Often those offended about political correctness are openly hostile to Muslims, even advocating they be “carpet bombed into oblivion” while at the same time advocating they not be allowed to immigrate to America. Heck they don’t want anyone, not of ‘our culture’ immigrating. Yet they don’t see themselves as bigots. They are just ‘tired of political correctness.’ Uh huh...

These same people who rattle off all kinds of angst against political correctness are often the same people who condemn anyone who questions the US war effort on terror. They bristle at the idea that a soldier should be explicitly thanked for their service without regard to whether they spent their entire service on a landlocked American base or whether they were on the front lines.

When it comes to the police, they often see any criticism of law enforcement as “anti-police” no matter the truth of the violation committed by the offending cop. Their reflexive defense of the police without regard to the facts defy reason given the overwhelming problems we are seeing in law enforcement today. But bring it up and you are part of the problem in America. One person actually referred to one of my pages as “Copblock” because I often raise the wrongful actions of those who indoctrinate that they are the good guys. When they aren’t, we should make it known. Perhaps to shift public opinion to something more realistic.

When it comes to firefighters, you’d think it’s beyond the pale to offer that firefighters don’t really put out many fires today relative to times past because of the changes in construction codes. Or that they work something to akin to 9 or 10 days a month and get paid for sleeping while on duty. Or that they often get to retire at 50 years of age and are able to have a second career while working their ‘full time’ firefighter careers. Or that they are well paid given the amount of education required for their jobs and that they spend most of their time doing something other than fighting fires. This is outrageous, apparently, because they are “heroes” and should be acknowledged as such.

You see, those who say they are offended by the ivory towers of colleges and universities have their own politically correct requirements. Truth is treason, literally to some of them. They demonize those who don’t hold their own politically correct views while complaining that they are being silenced. They complain that they cannot hear the words “merry Christmas” because businesses wish to express sensitivity to people of other faiths, or no faith at all, who are offended that a business would impose a Christian holiday on their phone lines. This is somehow an outrage to those who complain about political correctness.

Many of these same people bristle at the idea that they have enjoyed “white privilege.” In fact they find the entire concept offensive because they feel it diminishes their own efforts to be a success in life. And something I’ve noticed is that the older the person, the more offended by the term they are. And yet, the older among us were alive when there were separate drinking fountains, one for whites and one for blacks. They were adults in the early 60’s in Oklahoma City when blacks were not allowed to eat at restaurants open to the public. I myself recall a situation as a child in Mississippi while vacationing where my family walked into a restaurant where every table had a “reserved” sign on it. So we walked out. One of the workers ran out to us and asked why we were leaving? Well the tables were all reserved. He responded, “They’re reserved for you.” Sigh... Yeah reserved for white people. And somehow people who are white cannot understand why people speak of “white privilege?”

It’s clear that the entire disdain about political correctness has very little to do with the concept of political correctness and more to do with the idea that a right leaning white culture that has grown accustomed to imposing it’s own political correctness is getting overwhelmed by those who oppose them. It’s really about not being able espouse openly offensive terms without getting chastised. Bottom line, it’s the push back against bigotry that has them all up in arms. Because few people are more politically correct than those who claim they are offended by such things.
