CBS "60 Minutes" Exposes How Congress Members Dial for Dollars Instead of Doing their Work
CBS aired a segment on the Sunday program "60 Minutes" which detailed how members of Congress spend their time. It is against the law for them to make fund raising calls from their offices. So both major parties created call centers for congress members to use to raise money for themselves and their parties.
According to the story, members are advised to spend four hours a day making phone calls, soliciting money, offering favors, etc. A bill called the "Stop Act," offered by Florida Republican David Jolly seeks to end all soliciting for money by federal elected officials. It is interesting to note that no Oklahoma congressman has cosponsored the bill. In fact the bill only has six cosponsors.
In researching the fundraising by Republican US Senator James Lankford, he has been prolific in fund raising for both himself and the RNC. And he is so enriched with campaign donations that he will not likely debate his opponents in the upcoming election face to face. In fact, I would guess he wants to run his feel good campaign, bombarding the airwaves with pictures of children and seniors, touting him as a "devoted man of God."
But he will most certainly continue to dial for dollars. You'd think that the least he could do is grace Oklahomans with his presence in a debate with all of his opponents. His Democratic Party opponent will be Mike Workman. Dax Ewbank and Robert Murphy of the Libertarian Party will face off in the primary to see who will face Lankford in November.
Given the millions being raised by Lankford and the gargantuan nature of his print, broadcast, and social media campaign, he owes it to Oklahomans to face his opponents in a debate.
But will he? Some doubt it. Some believe he will refuse to debate because he has nothing to gain. I for one would like to know if he will support the "Stop Act" and urge other congress members to do the same?
Somehow I don't think he will. But one can hope right?
